Despite the fact that FSV Mainz 05 showed no interest in extending his loan spell at the end of last season and multiple reports suggesting that the Rheinhessen were no longer interested in acquiring him, Danny da Costa will be headed back to the Palatinate capital after all.
Mainz opted to take advantage of the 28-year-old’s expiring contract with Frankfurt this season and bring the Ness native back in on a free. The transaction was confirmed on Friday afternoon. The right fullback/wingback/winger made 16 appearances for Mainz in the 2020/21 “Return Round.”
“My time at Mainz was short,” since Costa is quoted as saying on the club’s website, “but definitely one of the more special and exciting times in my career.”
Da Costa’s new contract runs through 2025.
And we look forward to seeing you, Danny! 😍 #mainz05 pic.twitter.com/3dhXwt9mZh
